What kind of trailer can I pull?
Maximum towing weight for your car or driver's license
Are you heading out with a trailer and in doubt about whether you can pull it? This depends on a number of factors. For example, the weight of your own car plays a role, but also the weight of the trailer you want to pull and the driver’s license you hold. We list below all the factors you need to consider to determine which trailer you are allowed to tow.

What factors determine which trailer your car can tow?
1. Towing weight of the car
To determine which trailer you can pull, you need to look at the tow weight of the car. The towing weight depends on the car’s weight, dimensions and powertrain. Your car’s registration certificate shows how much your car can tow braked and unbraked. At HAPERT, we sell almost only braked trailers, so in the case of a HAPERT trailer, you often look at the braked weight.
2. Towing car weight
The trailer including cargo you want to carry must not be heavier than the car pulling the trailer. On your registration certificate you will find the weight of your car. If you are going to transport a car or implement with a car transporter, keep in mind that the weight of the trailer + car is not greater than the car pulling this trailer.
3. Driving License
Anyone authorized to drive a car holds a B driver’s license. Driving license B also allows you to tow a trailer under some conditions. Thus, you are allowed to tow a trailer when the maximum weight of your car + trailer added together remains below 3500 kg. In addition, it is always permitted to tow a trailer up to 750 kg, even if the total weight thereby exceeds 3500 kg.
Are you traveling with a combination heavier than 4250 kg? Then you need driver’s license BE or B+.
