Difference between a braked trailer and an unbraked trailer
A distinction is made between braked and unbraked trailers. An unbraked trailer is a trailer that does not have its own braking system. This means that the trailer must be braked by the towing vehicle.
Maximum permitted mass
The maximum towing capacity of an unbraked trailer is lower than that of a braked trailer. If you have an unbraked trailer, your car may tow no more than 750 kg, including the trailer weight plus load.
Unbraked or braked trailer?
Unbraked trailers do not need to be registered, do not require separate insurance and do not need to be inspected annually. You only need a white number plate on the trailer that matches the number plate of your own car.
Braked trailers with a permitted maximum mass above 750 kg must be registered and also receive their own number plate.
Driving License
Anyone with a category B driving licence may tow an unbraked trailer. With a category B driving licence, you may tow a trailer with a total weight of up to 750 kg.
To tow a braked trailer, you often need a BE driving licence. Our trailers are available with a gross vehicle weight of up to 3,500 kg. In those cases, a BE driving licence is therefore required.
