When to inspect your trailer?
Rules about inspecting your trailer
Do you have a
trailer
and are you curious what the rules are regarding the inspection of your trailer? We are happy to tell you more about it. In fact, in some cases your trailer must be inspected at the RDW. What rules are involved and in what cases a trailer must be inspected, you can read on this page.
Which trailer inspection?
In the Netherlands, many trailers do not have to be inspected. The RDW states that only trailers over 3500 kg must be APK approved. This means that for all trailers sold by HAPERT, there is no MOT requirement. However, we do recommend having the trailer serviced once in a while.
Trailer maintenance
It is wise to have annual maintenance performed on your trailer. Even if you do not need to have your trailer inspected, it is always good to have regular brake maintenance done. In the workshops at HAPERT dealers, we often perform maintenance checks. You can come to us to have your brakes adjusted or the brake lining cleaned. Are your overrun dampers, break cables or brake cables broken? Then stop by for a maintenance checkup as well.
Some things you can monitor and maintain yourself:
Tires of your trailer
Check the pressure of the tires. The air pressure in your tires is important to maintain optimal grip on the road. Your braking distance, steering and handling will be optimized as a result. Your fuel consumption is also lower with proper tire pressure.
The ideal tire pressure can be found in the instruction booklet. By not leaving heavy items in a stationary trailer and moving the trailer regularly, you ensure better tire condition.
Breaking cable check
The breakaway cable has an important role when the trailer detaches from the hitch while driving. The breakaway cable then causes the car and trailer combination to come to a quick stop. It is important to check that the breakaway cable is not broken or worn. So keep a regular eye on this.
Cover your trailer outside
At HAPERT, trailers are made of the highest quality and the best materials. To ensure that your trailer remains of this quality, it is wise to cover trailers stored outside with a flat tarp. This way you make sure rust doesn’t get a chance.
Trailer inspection or not?
Thus, most trailers do not require inspection. Only above 3500 kg the RDW states that a trailer must be APK approved. This does not apply to all the trailers we sell at HAPERT.
At HAPERT, we are only satisfied with the best quality. Our trailers are subjected to high quality and safety requirements. Therefore, with HAPERT you get a 10-year warranty on the chassis and an additional year of manufacturer’s warranty after registration. However, it is important to have your trailer inspected annually so that your warranty remains valid.
