HYDRO REDUXA
At Hapert Trailers, we use aluminium from Hydro in our products. For us, it is important where and how our products are produced. More than two-thirds of Hydro’s global aluminium production is based on hydropower, which means Hydro is part of the aluminium industry with some of the lowest CO₂ emissions.
Hapert Trailers recognises its social responsibility and wants to make its products increasingly sustainable. That is only possible by taking full responsibility for the complete product chain of which the Hapert trailer is part: from the raw materials used right through to the moment the trailer eventually disappears from the street scene.
“In a low-carbon world, we still need materials. Materials that are produced responsibly, with low emissions, that can be recycled and that last longer.” This is exactly why the choice of materials plays such an important role in developing a sustainable trailer.
Energy consumption in aluminium production
Producing aluminium requires a lot of energy. That is why we believe it is very important to work with suppliers that use energy sources with a small ecological footprint. Traditionally, an aluminium plant generates its electricity using coal. Because Hydro uses renewable hydropower, wind and solar energy, very environmentally friendly aluminium is produced.
Hydro’s primary aluminium production capacity in Norway is supplied 100% by renewable energy. Worldwide, Hydro’s corresponding share of renewable electricity is above 70%. At the end of 2018, Hydro was the fourth-largest buyer of renewable electricity in the world and the largest in Europe.
With aluminium from Hydro, we choose a material with a lower carbon footprint and material properties that are suitable for more sustainable production and consumption. Aluminium is lightweight, which reduces energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions during product use. Aluminium is 100% renewable, and recycling it requires only 5% of the energy needed to produce the metal for the first time. For Hapert, this contributes directly to building a more sustainable trailer that is strong, practical and designed for long-term use.
Our aluminium is ASI-certified
Hydro’s aluminium is ASI-certified. ASI-certified aluminium means that it is produced according to a comprehensive standard for governance, environmental and social performance. Hydro aluminium certified according to the ASI Performance Standard and the ASI Chain of Custody Standard helps us document that our aluminium products are responsibly sourced and produced throughout the entire value chain. This certification supports our ambition to keep improving every sustainable trailer we build, from material choice to final product.
