Which driving licence do you need for an open box trailer?
With a category B driving licence, you may tow a trailer up to a weight of 750 kg. This is the weight of the trailer plus the load. With category B, you may also tow a trailer heavier than 750 kg, as long as the total weight of the car and trailer does not exceed 3,500 kg.
Our open box trailers have a minimum gross vehicle weight of 750 kg and can be configured up to 3,500 kg. This means that in some cases you can already tow an open box trailer with a category B driving licence, but with heavier loads you will often need a B+ or BE driving licence.

What is the difference between a single-axle and a tandem-axle open box trailer?

Can I tow a 750 kg open box trailer with a category B driving licence?
Yes. A trailer with a permitted maximum mass of up to 750 kg may be towed with a category B driving licence behind a suitable car. A heavier trailer may also be driven with category B under certain conditions, as long as the permitted maximum mass of the car and trailer together does not exceed 3,500 kg. Always check the registration certificate of both the car and the trailer, as well as the maximum towbar load of the car.
When do I need a BE driving licence for an open box trailer?
Whether you need category B, B+ or BE depends on the permitted maximum mass of the car and open box trailer. With category B, the combination may weigh up to 3,500 kg under certain conditions. With B+, the permitted maximum mass of the combination may be up to 4,250 kg. For heavier combinations, a BE driving licence may be required. Always check the current rules and the details on the registration certificate for your situation.
How much weight can I load in an open box trailer?
This differs per version. Do not only look at the permitted maximum mass of the open box trailer, but also at its unladen weight. The actual payload is the difference between these two. An open box trailer with a permitted maximum mass of 3,500 kg cannot automatically carry 3,500 kg of load. Also check how much your car is actually allowed to tow.
