When does a trailer not have a license plate?
There are a number of requirements for a trailer that determine whether or not it must have a license plate. In fact, a trailer never drives without a license plate, but there are cases where a trailer does not need its own license plate. In this case, you use a white license plate with the same license plate number as the car pulling the trailer.
Maximum towing weight
A trailer without a license plate has an authorized maximum mass of 750 kg. This refers to the weight of the trailer + load. All trailers with a gross payload not exceeding 750 kg may be driven without their own registration certificate.
Unbraked or braked trailer
There is a difference between unbraked and braked trailers. Unbraked trailers have an authorized maximum mass of 750 kg and are therefore always allowed to drive without their own license plate. Most braked trailers have a gross payload > 750 kg and thus are not allowed on the road without their own license plates.
